I have a recumbent trike and due to Parkinsons disease, I have a difficult time loading and unloading it from my car. In fact, I have to have somebody help me.
So I came up with a solution. I built a ramp to allow me to run the back wheel up and into the back of my car while I hold onto the front two wheels.

I made the ramp by cutting notches in one end of a 1×6 and taking a bungee loop, running it through the eye of the door latch and the board to hold it in place. I initially tried it without side rails, but it was hard to keep the wheel on the ramp. I then added railings on each side which it much easier to do by yourself.

Now I have no trouble getting my trike in and out of the car. I no longer have to rely on someone to come with me or find a kind stranger to help. This ramp is definitely a game-changer!

Hello. I just bought an ICE Adventure HD a couple of days ago (my first trike) and I’ve been loading it into my Suburu Forester but struggling a bit. It has electric assist making quite heavy.
I’ve been looking for a solution and came across your post. May I ask how long is your board? Do you think adding a piano hinge would work so I may fold it to fit inside my car. Also did you need to cut the small strips on the sides or can I buy strips like that in the hardware store? Did you attach them with wood glue?
I appreciate any advice you have.
Thank yiu,
Tracy

length about 6ft. it can be whatever length you find comfortable. ive considered a hinge but didnt need one for my car. though if the hinge is a strong one then should be fine. i cut the side strips myself but you can buy them as 2in x 2in in various lengths. i found the side strips necessary to keep trike guided on ramp. i used screws to attach but suggest predrilling the holes so you dont split the wood. liquid nails works good to if you dont want to deal with screws but clamp or weight down the wood while drying. hope that helps.
